About This Volume

The first volume of Swecchaa Kavitvamu collects thirteen individual poetry collections spanning fifty years — from 1953 to 2002. It opens with Maanaveeyam (1971), a sweeping meditation on human evolution from primitive existence to civilised society, and closes with Kiranpatham (2002), a late work that traces the path of light itself. In between lie poems of dawn, awakening, democratic aspiration, and the grief of Vietnam. The framing poem 'Udayadhuni' — the morning sun rising over hillcrests, pouring light across sand — sets the volume's keynote: illumination as both physical fact and philosophical promise. Each line, as the poet writes in his preface, functions as philosophical definition. A foundational text for anyone entering Telugu free verse.
